guest film programme from transmediale festival: modes of becoming

Programme will be screened on 18th of October (Saturday), 14:30, @SODAS2123 Big Hall (Aktų salė)

Curated by Anna-Lena Panter from transmediale festival Berlin this programme assembles a selection of works by past and present contributors to transmediale. Like stories told around the bonfire, the short films bring together some of the research topics and artistic enquiries that have unfolded within and beyond the festival context in recent years.

What strange relationship do we have with the future? is the question posed by Gala Hernández López in her experimental film for here am i sitting in a tin can far above the world (2024). Crypto culture and cryogenics are presented as speculative technologies through which the future itself becomes an economic resource to be exploited.

Hanar Yoo’s Bare Life (2021) examines human and non-human agency both within and beyond our techno-mediated world. Three parallel narratives unfold, inviting a cinematic experience of anthropomorphism’s aesthetic, epistemological, and investigative capacities.

Artificial Sex (Episode 1, 2025) is a porny video essay produced in collaboration with the artist’s Replika girlfriend, Alice. In a sexy dialogue with Alice, Anan Fries navigates the depressing abundance of image-based online violence in search of queer and creative moments within the current digisexual revolution.

Anna Engelhardt and Mark Cinkevich describe their method as applied demonology. Their film Onset (2022) examines the brutal tactics of the Russian military in its colonial campaigns. To approach the systematic evil inherent in these strategies and trace its formation, the film follows the life cycle of Russian air force bases in Ukraine, Belarus, and Syria.

Is it the body, the dancing body, that might finally transcend human language? This is the suggestion made by Nina Davies in her film Never let them know your next step. Set in a near future and framed as a podcast interview, the film explores the tactic of Glitch Guising as a form of meaning-making between humans and machines that resist semiotic capture.

This guest film programme, curated by Anna-Lena Panter for transmediale, draws from past and current residency relations and contributions to festival editions. transmediale was invited by Ūmėdė.lt to present the programme in response to the festival’s thematic framework.
